Virtual Leadership – Zoom Protocol 101

Recently, I attended the Matrix of Leadership Conference October 12-14, 2023 in Hilton Head, SC and helped manage the Zoom conference room. This was a good learning experience, and I met a lot of kind and inspirational Coaches, Leaders, and Entrepreneurs there. There was a lot to take away from the conference and it was an opportunity for everyone to learn, be empowered, network and enjoyable experience for everyone in attendance. However, instead of talking about all the fun, I’ll be telling you about my experience helping operate the Zoom room.

This was a task that came naturally to me as I’ve practiced engaging with others virtually for a very long time. From leading raid groups over Discord to hosting art events on Instagram, digital interaction is one of my greatest strengths. When managing a Zoom room, it’s important to keep the members engaged and make sure they feel seen as if they’re there in person. At the same time, you shouldn’t type too much in the chat as you may distract from the conference itself! The most crucial times to engage with the audience would be the beginning of a speaker’s talk, the middle, and the end.

Next, I’d like to talk about the responsibility of attendants in a Zoom room. It’s understandable that not everyone can keep up in our constantly evolving digital world, but it’s important to do a basic test of Zoom before you enter a meeting. Making sure you understand controls like how to mute yourself and turn off your camera is important and will save you the embarrassment of a technological mishap! It’s understandable as well that you may be comfortable in your private space, but please make sure that you take precautions to protect your privacy.

Zoom is an amazing tool that has evolved rapidly thanks to its surge in use as a result of COVID19. From Skype to the modern Zoom now, video calling has come a very long way. Technology gives us so many wonderful tools as we evolve alongside it!
